“A ruling of fundamental importance because it concerns a new type of mafia, different from the traditional one of bombs and massacres, but which equally conditions the social environment with intimidation and silence, feeds on corruption and attacks the ganglia of the public administration, in particular a part of the Municipality of Rome”. This is how the president of the National Anti-Corruption Authority, Raffaele Cantone, interviewed by La Stampa, defines the decision of the Court of Appeal of Rome on the Mondo di mezzo. “It is – he adds – a different mafia from the typical one, which evokes fewer images of bombs and shotguns and is more connected to white-collar workers. As the Court of Cassation had already configured in the precautionary phase, Mafia Capitale is a system in which corruption represents a mafia penetration into the territory”. The president of the Anti-Corruption Authority believes “it is differently dangerous than the others. Because it calls into question the regularity of public administration activities, the competitive spirit of businesses and the right to access public resources. Having recognized its existence restores citizens' trust in public administration". Cantone observes that "in the past, politics moved on an equal footing with the mafia, while today it plays an ancillary role. And, as Mafia Capitale also demonstrates, today politicians are involved in mafia plots not for party interests but purely personal ones".
