One hundred shots of Cuba taken from 1992 to 2006. This is the photographic exhibition “Cuban Trilogy”, by Ernesto Bazan, which will be inaugurated tomorrow at the Pan in Naples. The exhibition includes photographs from his three books: Bazan Cuba (1998), Al Campo (2011) and Isla (2014). In the exhibition the three bodies of work mix together creating a unique and personal blend. The visitor is transported on an intimate journey among the characters of an island full of poetry, suffering, joy and empathy that in many ways recalls his native Sicily: the two islands become one. In the first book Bazan Cuba, the photographer captures the quintessence of everyday life by photographing unknown people met for a few seconds on the streets of the island; a reportage approach that combines with the more intimate and personal one that is evident in the photos that portray various moments in the life of his family and his peasant friends, with whom he shared long periods in the unforgettable Cuban countryside. In Al Campo, his color photographic project expresses the unforgettable experiences shared with his peasant friends. The photos tell the extraordinary colors of the island and in particular of the Cuban countryside, with its extraordinary shades of green, yellow, red and blue. In Isla, the third volume of the trilogy, the photographer used a panoramic format camera and black and white film. “I arrived in Cuba for the first time, almost by chance, in the fall of 1992,” says Bazan, “I began a love affair with the island, which lasted fourteen years. On the streets of Havana I rediscovered my Sicilian childhood. I am almost certain that I lived there in another life.” Bazan's passion for photography began in Palermo, when, according to his story, he heard a voice telling him that he should be a photographer. He moved to New York to study photography at the School of Visual Arts and, after graduating, he joined the Magnum agency and then began a career as a freelance photographer representing major European and American newspapers. Promoted by the Municipality of Naples, the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Naples and the Pan/Palazzo delle Arti Napoli, the exhibition is organized by BazanPhotos and coordinated by Federica Di Lorenzo. Graphic designer Daniele Alamia.
