With resources estimated at approximately €14 million, the construction site at the Royal Palace of Caserta will reopen in November to complete further renovation and conservation work. The first construction site, completed in 2016 at a cost of €16 million, involved the main facades of the Palazzo Vanvitelliano. The call for tenders for the new construction sites was prepared by the Invitalia company, and the deadline for submitting bids for the contracts is tomorrow. Therefore, the contract will be awarded by Christmas, with construction work scheduled to begin in the spring. The new work will allow for the most urgent tasks to be completed. There will essentially be three different construction sites, involving the palace, the park, and the English garden. Regarding the palace, this will include the restoration of the portions of the facades that were excluded from previous work; the restoration of the two side entrance halls of the main entrance façade; The restoration of the roof of the western wing, which collapsed in 2014, and of the rear portion of the Palatine Chapel; the restoration of portions of the marble cladding of the staircase; and the restoration of the historic furnishings and decorations of the bedrooms of Francis II and Joachim Murat in the XNUMXth-century wing. The park project, meanwhile, will involve tree maintenance, including felling, thinning, and replacement, as well as the restoration of the architectural finishes and paths in the Peschiera area.
For the English garden, the restoration will focus on the ancient seven gardens and the maintenance and upgrading of the existing systems. Following these renovations, further work is planned on the interior of the Palace, with an additional €53 million earmarked for the complete restoration of the Royal Palace of Caserta. "We know how much good the previous construction site did for the Royal Palace and the city of Caserta," said Mauro Felicori, director of the Royal Palace of Caserta, during the press conference presenting the works. "We inherited a dilapidated Royal Palace, and we're returning it restored. When we started, we had zero euros and zero skills," he added, "now we have more money than we can spend. But the restoration is crucial, not only for the Royal Palace itself, but also for its significant economic impact on the city: the last construction site employed approximately 150 qualified workers, most of them under 40 and women. It's true that we're the last province in Italy, but there's a great desire for redemption."
