Architectural barriers: instead of eliminating them, the Municipality of Pozzuoli creates new ones

In recent months, work has been underway in Pozzuoli to renovate the public lighting system, costing the community over 10 million euros. In some areas of the city, the new light poles have been installed right in the middle of the sidewalks, probably in defiance of the rules, thus creating significant difficulties not only for disabled citizens but also for those who find themselves walking along them with a simple stroller.
The members of the M5S Pozzuoli Council Group, Antonio Caso and Domenico Critelli, are not having it and declare: «What is happening is absurd. Since our installation in the Council we have carried out the “battle” to make our city more liveable and suitable for everyone. In November 2017 we requested to include in the programmatic lines of the Mayor's mandate the proposal to draft and adopt the Plan for the Elimination of Architectural Barriers (PEBA). Following the commitment in question by the Mayor to make the contents his own, the M5S Pozzuoli withdrew the amendment. However, in the Programming Document (DUP), presented by the Council, there was no trace of the PEBA and in April 2018, together with POZZUOLI ORA!, we presented a new amendment, approved by everyone. Faced with the inertia of the Administration, we requested and obtained, a month ago, the convening of a joint Commission, Urban Planning and Public Works, in which it was finally decided to start.
Today, we learn, thanks to a complaint by our activist Simone Di Giulio, that with the new works for the renovation of public lighting, which cost the community over 10 million euros, new architectural barriers are being created: lampposts installed in the middle of sidewalks that create significant difficulties not only for the disabled but also for parents with a stroller. The two Five Star Councilors conclude: "Instead of moving forward, we are going backwards here. For us, all of this is unacceptable. The Mayor should give us explanations, identify responsibilities and make those who made mistakes pay. It is not possible that it is always the citizens who pay the price."
