UA 21-year-old man from the province of Caserta was crushed to death by a tree that fell on him while he was walking on Via Claudio, in the Fuorigrotta neighborhood of Naples. The Carabinieri intervened on the scene and called 118. The boy was taken to the nearby San Paolo hospital where he died.
Two more injured in via Montagna Spaccata, between the Pianura and Quarto neighborhoods, a tree fell on a car in transit and two people were involved in the accident. On site were 118 personnel and the police, as well as the municipal police. At Naples international airport there are difficulties for both departing and arriving flights due to the strong gusts of wind that are hitting the runway. Two planes from Geneva and Eindhoven were diverted to Brindisi; three flights headed to Naples and departing from Dublin, Amsterdam and Malpensa landed in Lamezia Terme. Another flight from Basel was diverted to Bari. It is not excluded that other flights will be rerouted to other airports, especially considering the wind that is expected to increase. The ticket office of the Ercolano archaeological park closed early due to insufficient lighting and the strong wind that is currently affecting Naples and the municipalities of the province. This was ordered by the director of the archaeological site, Francesco Sirano, who also announced that tourists and visitors present inside the archaeological park will be asked to exit with caution. From April 1 to October 31, access to the Herculaneum excavations is permitted from 8.30:19.30 to 18.00:XNUMX with last entry at XNUMX:XNUMX.
Wind gusts of exceptional intensity have been lashing the coastal area of Naples for several hours. The fire department switchboards are under siege due to hundreds of requests for intervention related to fallen trees or dangerous cornices. According to the Air Force weather forecast website, gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour are being recorded in Naples.
"The weather conditions have worsened over the last few hours, with very strong winds. We are taking all necessary measures to intervene, considering the various types of damage that are occurring. I therefore invite you to pay maximum attention and to move as little as possible, to leave your home only if strictly necessary, to be prudent and to limit your movements". This is the appeal launched to citizens by the mayor of Pozzuoli Vincenzo Figliolia, who announces: "I will shortly issue the ordinance to close all schools in the area of all levels as a precaution and to allow maintenance companies to restore the full functionality of the buildings after having carefully and thoroughly verified the perfect use of the internal and external spaces".
A large tree fell, due to the wind, on the Sorrento state road, between Meta and Seiano. No cars were involved. There was serious disruption to traffic. “Unfortunately, this time too, we were bad prophets. For years we have been calling for the safety of via Nuova Faito, in light of landslides that are systematically repeated. We feared the risk of a new closure of the only road connecting the Faito districts to the center of Vico Equense, while waiting for the reopening of via Quisisana. Unfortunately, the strong winds of these hours have caused the felling of trees that have invaded long stretches of the road, cutting the cables of the public lighting, making it impassable and once again isolating the communities that live on the mountain. And only by chance there was no tragedy, considering that the road at those very hours was used by citizens going to work and by parents accompanying their children to school. The road has been closed since this morning, also in consideration of the possible risk of other trees falling along it”. This is what regional councilor of the 5 Star Movement Luigi Cirillo informs. “Just in the last few days – Cirillo recalls – I filed a question with the regional council, asking governor De Luca if and when he intends to intervene and with what resources, considering that the Region owns 50% of the Monte Faito Park. Now more than ever it is necessary to urgently convene a meeting with the Region and the Metropolitan City, owner of the other 50%, so as to give life as soon as possible to a planning activity of interventions to make the area safe from a hydrogeological point of view, also equipping via Nuova Faito with an adequate lighting system, which takes into account the critical state in which the area finds itself. Faito is a naturalistic heritage of considerable importance for the tourist economy of our region. The indifference of the Region and the Metropolitan City is incomprehensible. Urgent, targeted, structural interventions are needed, not only to guarantee its safety and protect the safety of those who travel along it, but also for a definitive relaunch of nature tourism".
