LThe Court of Cassation closes the legal proceedings for two murders committed during the Casalesi clan's internal feud, almost entirely confirming the sentence issued by the Court of Appeal of Naples, only partially accepting the appeal of a defendant who obtains a two-year reduction in sentence. The sentences of 30 years for Giovanni Letizia, 38 years old from Aversa, and Franco Letizia, 41 years old from Aversa have been made official; 22 years for Nicola Verolla, 62 years old from Lusciano; 12 years for Antonio Verde, 38 years old from Aversa; 24 years for Luigi Grassia, 45 years old from Casal di Principe (who obtained a two-year reduction).
The legal proceedings concern two Camorra ambushes that occurred between 2001 and 2002 in Villa Literno and Castel Volturno that caused the death of Augusto Negri and Carmelo Giardina. According to the reconstruction, Negri's murder was a revenge against Cesare Tavoletta's secessionists, who had harassed the partner of one of the Bidognetti family, but also by some competing initiatives in drug trafficking that had not been "welcomed" by the boss's group. The ambush was prepared in a farmhouse and carried out in the square of the Villa Literno train station. The murder of Carmelo Giardina, however, occurred in January 2002 in a bar in Castel Volturno: the victim was taken by surprise by the killers who had positioned themselves in an area behind another establishment near the victim's. The Attorney General himself had appealed against the acquittals of Giosuè Fioretto (55 years old from Naples) and Armando Letizia (65 years old from Casal di Principe), but both acquittals were confirmed by the magistrates.
