LThe capture of the fugitive, underlines the provincial commander of Naples, Umberto Del Monaco, "is an important result both for the criminal thickness that we have taken and because every result achieved by our investigators is important". For months, explains Del Monaco, the military of the Arma di Castello di Cisterna had been on the lookout traces of Orlando, but in the last few days there had been an acceleration of the investigation because it was believed that the boss would not remain in the Mugnano hideout, occupied by the sixty-year-old for a maximum of twenty days. “We were checking a series of contacts. Some signals made us believe that an imminent change of hideout was possible. And so it was decided to intervene with a raid,” Del Monaco explained. There are several provisions against him accumulated in these years of being a fugitive starting in 2003. The operation, explains the commander of the Castello di Cisterna group, Gaspare Giardelli, was complex because in that three-story villa there were 16 apartments and also garages. It was necessary to identify the right apartment, and prevent the boss from finding a way to escape. “We had to break down the door but Orlando immediately raised his arms in surrender,” he says. “His clan has roots that go back years and is affiliated with Cosa Nostra.” The commander of the investigative unit of Castello di Cisterna Antonio Bagarolo underlines how the investigation was difficult because the clan's protection for its regent was strong. "Antonio Orlando is called 'o mazzolino because he is a fervent fan of Inter, a team that in the collective imagination is still represented by Sandro Mazzola. Now the investigations are continuing to try to understand what cover he enjoyed during these long years of being a fugitive; probably the documents he tried to burn contained useful elements in this sense".
“On behalf of the municipal administration and the entire citizenry, I thank the police forces and in particular the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Naples for last night’s brilliant operation, which led to the arrest of Antonio Orlando, included by the Ministry of the Interior in the list of the 15 most dangerous fugitives in Italy”. This was stated by the mayor of Quarto, Antonio Sabino, upon learning of the arrest of the super-fugitive Antonio Orlando. “The criminal influence of the Orlando-Polverino-Nuvoletta clan – added Sabino – has extended for years also to the territory of Quarto. Arrests like this give hope to the thousands of honest and respectable citizens, who respect the law and believe that the redemption of a territory can come first and foremost from the restoration of legality”.
