AThe twenty-five defendants, believed to be close to the criminal cartels in the Vesuvian area involved in extortion and racketeering, will all face trial with an ordinary procedure. They are the Vollaro family from Portici, the Ascione and Birra families from Ercolano and the Papale family from Torre del Greco. They are charged with aggravated extortion, mafia-style criminal association, threats, attempted murder and aggravated extortion. Yesterday, the request for the constitution of the civil parties of Ercolano was made. The Municipality of Ercolano represented by the mayor Bonajuto and the anti-racketeering association “Ercolano per la legalità” were constituted. The mega investigation, as Il Roma recalls, starts with the seizure of a diary containing dozens and dozens of entrepreneurs who were victims of extortion. For the investigators, these are extortions that have been perpetuated for at least twenty years. Among the various names is that of Mario Ascione, locked up under the 41 bis regime in the Milanese prison of Opera. According to investigators, he is one of the bosses of the clan with bases and interests between Torre del Greco and Ercolano. Pasquale Spronello, affiliated with the wing of the Ascione-Papale clan led by the boss Natale Dantese, will also be facing trial. In December 2017, Spronello was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Salvatore Barbaro, an innocent victim of the Camorra feud between the Ascione-Papale and the Birra-Iacomino families. Also in court is Giorgio Di Bartolomeo, son-in-law of the late Raffaele Ascione, known as Raffaele 'o luongo. Among the defendants is Luigi Nocerino, currently incarcerated in hard prison. Pietro Vollaro, one of the many sons of the boss Vollaro, historic godfather of the Camorra in Portici, is also among the defendants. Of the 26 involved in the proceedings, only ten are at liberty, all the others are already in prison for criminal activities committed in previous years. The next hearing is scheduled for January 29, 2019.
