San Marzano sul Sarno. Waste plugs in the Sarno river: there is a risk that the watercourse could flood in several places. The alarm was raised by Aniello Robustelli, a retired policeman who has always loved nature. “Everyone knows about the clarity of the waters of the Rio Palazzo and the mouth of the Sarno but a few kilometers away there is the other side of the coin, the monstrous one made of waste and mountains of plastic. This could seem like a landfill – he says pointing his finger at a pile of waste in the middle of the watercourse – there is everything: plastic, brushwood, polystyrene. But above all it is a danger for the hundreds of people who live in the area, because with the river blocked for hundreds of meters there is a risk of flooding”. In the stretch of the river that goes from Sarno to Foce there are several islands of waste of all kinds, at least 3 plugs have formed in San Marzano: plastic, waste and vegetation are blocking part of the watercourse. There is also concern among the farmers in the area who have repeatedly alerted the Land Reclamation Consortium that should carry out maintenance and clean the banks to avoid flooding especially in this period of the year rich in rain.
