LThe fifth section of the Court of Appeal of Naples has issued a sentence against three Neapolitans accused of criminal conspiracy aimed at defrauding the elderly. A crime that has become very widespread lately, and equally hateful because it preys on the sensitivity and fragility of the elderly. The events took place during 2016 in the province of Campobasso, and one episode also involved an elderly gentleman from Sorrento, who at his home, in the Cinzia park, had seen himself “extorted” almost 600 euros with the usual, but effective, excuse of an advance for legal expenses to resolve a phantom road accident suffered by a close relative.
Well, the three men knew how to be so convincing that they could get the money without even much effort. All they had to do was make a phone call and pretend to be a lawyer or a Carabinieri marshal, ask for a sum of money, almost always available to the unsuspecting elderly people, and say that a representative of theirs would be passing by shortly, that the scam was complete. The four men were incriminated (one of them was tried separately) by the phone calls intercepted on their “intercom” lines. The sentences in the first instance, with the abbreviated trial, had almost reached 6 years. All confirmed today by the Court of Appeal of Naples, except for the sixty-year-old AA of Naples, who, assisted by the criminal lawyer Olga Coda from Castellammare di Stabia, had his sentence reduced by 2 years.
