Gianluca Vialli opens up about himself in an interview with Corriere della Sera. Not only football: the former Juventus and Sampdoria striker revealed for the first time that he had cancer. “I would have gladly done without it. But it wasn’t possible. So I simply considered it a phase of my life that had to be lived with courage and from which I could learn something,” he said. “It takes over you like a sense of shame, as if what happened to you was your fault. I walked around with a sweater under my shirt, so that others wouldn’t notice anything, to still be the Vialli they knew. Then I decided to tell my story and put it in the book ('Goals. 360 stories + 98 to face the most difficult challenges', ed.)”. “How am I now? Good, actually very good. A year has passed and I’m back to having a beastly physique,” he added jokingly. “But I’m still not sure how the match will end. I hope my story can serve to inspire people who find themselves at life’s crucial crossroads.”
