An emotional moment before the start, in memory of Anna Mazzola, the first Italian swimmer to win the prestigious Capri-Naples race in 1957; then the start of the second edition of the Coppa Natale-Trofeo Vecchio Amaro del Capo, a winter side event of the Maratona del Golfo, scheduled for September 2019 when the 54th edition will take place. Naples provided a sunny day with mild temperatures and virtually calm seas, with the gulf providing the unique backdrop for the swimming competition, which serves as the regional winter open water championship for both competitive and master swimmers. The approximately 100 athletes tackled the 250-meter race, a triangular course starting from the cliffs adjacent to the Circolo Posillipo, swimming to Palazzo Donnanna and back. The winner of the competitive event was Luca Schiatterella from Posillipo. In the masters category, the best overall time trials were held by Giuseppe Cantisano (Caravaggio) and Daniela Calvino (Sporting Club Flegreo), with awards subsequently presented to all the winners of the various age categories. Giovanni La Monica, the aquatic Santa Claus, also received recognition for his masked swim. The Circolo Nautico Posillipo, which won the second edition of the Coppa Natale-Trofeo Vecchio Amaro del Capo, was named best club. Organizer Luciano Cotena expressed satisfaction: "The Coppa Natale is growing in numbers and is proving to be a new opportunity for promoting and enhancing tourism, as has been the case for several years with the official Capri-Napoli race and the unofficial competitions, which attract hundreds of athletes from all over the world to Campania."
