The new lighting outside the entrance to the Ercolano Archaeological Park has been active since this weekend. Thanks to the elegant play of light that exploits the exedra architecture of the historic entrance on Corso Resina, the passageway marking the boundary between the ancient and modern city has been enhanced. The new lighting was created by the company Engie, which last May entered into a partnership with the Municipality of Ercolano for the management and renovation of the public lighting systems. "The new lighting at the historic entrance to the park from Corso Resina once again embodies the interinstitutional, public-private partnership that this Directorate has fostered since its inception," explains Francesco Sirano, director of the Ercolano Archaeological Park. "The site is charged with symbolic values: long a point of division between two cities that never spoke to each other, today increasingly a gateway for all between two times, two realities, two places populated by citizens and visitors aware of both. The artistic lights installed in the exedra at the entrance to the excavations dematerialize the masonry: and this is precisely how we want to see the Park, barrier-free and integrated into the city, growing with the city and together with it discovering the many cultural values that have permeated these places for 300 years, making life in the shadow of a terrifying volcano a masterpiece of art and civilization that cannot be extinguished or ignored despite the contingent and structural challenges that grip daily life."
“Looking to the future without ever forgetting our past: this is the philosophy that drove us to start a partnership with Engie aimed at modernizing the public lighting system and, at the same time, at energy savings that, in addition to an economic value, has an enormous ethical significance – says Ciro Buonajuto, Mayor of Ercolano -. The work done at the historic entrance to the archaeological excavations marks an important step in the enhancement of our inestimable historical and cultural heritage”.
“We are honored to be a partner of the Municipality of Ercolano, a location recognized beyond the Italian borders for its historical and archaeological heritage, a UNESCO heritage site” – says Fabrizio Di Battista, Director of the Southern Adriatic Area of Engie Italia -. As an architect of the territory, we actively collaborate with over 350 Italian municipalities for energy efficiency projects, in which we manage over 400.000 light points. For the Municipality of Ercolano we are redeveloping the entrance to the archaeological site of the Scavi with latest-generation, high-efficiency LED technology, and installing photovoltaic and intelligent poles. These interventions will allow a reduction in energy consumption of over 65%, equal to a cut in CO2 emissions of approximately 850 tons per year. Our goal is to reconcile individual and collective interests, supporting municipalities in the implementation of virtuous projects, for the benefit of the environment, a better quality of life for people, and more harmonious progress”.
