The City of Casalnuovo di Napoli is preparing to celebrate the bicentenary of the writing of one of the most famous poems in the history of poetry, written by Giacomo Leopardi: "L'Infinito." Giacomo Leopardi's most important poem, "L'Infinito," was written in 1819 in Recanati and turns two hundred years old in 2019. And right at the start of the new year, a Social Library will be inaugurated in Casalnuovo di Napoli, sponsored by the "Una Città Che..." Association, named after "Giacomo Leopardi." The library will house a bronze bust of Giacomo Leopardi by master sculptor Domenico Sepe, who explains: "One of the central tenets of Leopardi's poetics is the idea of infinity; it refers to everything that is unlimited, a dimension radically opposed to the human one. From this concept comes the need to create an eternal work, in bronze, a sculpture depicting Leopardi in reflection, his hand visible clutching a sheet of paper, the page on which the poet wrote 'The Infinite.' I am delighted to have encountered Giovanni Nappi on my artistic journey, a man of culture who strongly desired a work for Giacomo Leopardi and for the 200th anniversary of The Infinite." "A City That Writes" had already dedicated a tribute to Leopardi's manuscript. In fact, "L'Infinito," like other Leopardi manuscripts, was kept in Visso, a small village in the Marche region, and was exhibited at the Diocesan Civic Museum, whose structure was seriously damaged by the powerful tremors of the 2016 earthquake. After a visit to the small village in the Macerata region and a meeting with a local school group, the idea was born in 2016 to dedicate a special section of the "Una Città Che Scrive" Literary Prize to Visso, as a tangible sign of solidarity with the people affected by that year's earthquake. With the same determination, the cover of the anthology titled "Una Città Che Scrive, Una Città Che Rinasce" was dedicated to the city of Visso in 2017, with an image drawn by Alessandro Nespolino, a well-known Tex Willer cartoonist, depicting the historic center of the Macerata village and the hope for a swift rebirth and reconstruction through dedication and a love of culture, writing, and books. "Giacomo Leopardi, with L'Infinito, teaches us that love, friendship, and memories can endure forever. It may be too ambitious of us, but we want to try. We want to try to create things that can last forever. This is my wish for our little Social Library," says Giovanni Nappi, founder of the Una Città Che Scrive Literary Prize, explaining his decision to inaugurate the city's first Social Library, supported entirely by a private initiative.
To date, the small library already has over two thousand volumes donated by the citizens of Casalnuovo. Soon the list of works will be online on the new website of the library. The library will be located in Casalnuovo di Napoli at Via Roma 148. The inauguration is scheduled for the end of January. On the same date, the new call for applications for the 2019 edition of the Literary Award 'Una Città Che Scrive' will be launched.
