Naples. Two men wearing black bomber jackets and hoods pulled down over their faces, a 21-year-old and a 35-year-old, climb over the wall of the “Parco dell'Abbondanza”, a green area in Marianella and steal 26 manhole covers, the cast iron covers that close the manholes positioned along the paths of the park.
The Carabinieri of the Nucleo Radiomobile of Naples, alerted by the Operations Center, arrived after a few minutes and caught Gianluca Irace and Giovanni Caruso, both from Piscinola, in the act, arresting them for aggravated theft in competition. Their hands were still dirty with rust and mud.
One of the two tried, unsuccessfully, to get rid of the screwdriver they had used.
The 26 lids were recovered along the perimeter of the green area: the two had placed them outside the wall waiting to recover them and then load them into an old station wagon to take them away and, presumably, resell them. The manhole covers were returned to the rightful owner and reassembled in the park, allowing children to play safely again. The arrested are awaiting a direct trial.
