An officer on duty in a Turin prison was attacked by an inmate. The incident was reported by OSAPP, the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police, which is calling for officers to be equipped with "suitable tools to intervene in serious situations that threaten order and safety." The attack occurred yesterday during the inmate release. A 34-year-old Italian man of North African origin, serving time for stalking, robbery, and assault, violently headbutted an officer, who suffered a head injury. The attacker, placed in solitary confinement, was arrested. "The only ones who suffer from this are the prison police, the sole bastion of legality in prisons, which, as always, pays a very high price in terms of assaults and situations that threaten order and prison safety," commented OSAPP Secretary General Leo Beneduci. "Only self-sacrifice, a spirit of sacrifice, and the highest level of professionalism can make up for the functional, as well as structural, shortcomings of a prison administration adrift," he added. "Therefore, we must act without further delay to equip prison police personnel with the appropriate tools to address the serious escalation in attacks. Our solidarity with the seriously injured colleague."
