Not all of the foods we consume are safe. This is the topic of a question to the European Commission by Piernicola Pedicini, spokesperson for the Five Star Movement. According to the Court of Auditors' special report on European food safety, published on January 5, 15, in tests conducted by Member States on foods marketed in the European Union, "controls on enzymes, food flavorings, and food contact materials are almost nonexistent. For the latter, among other things, 2019 risk management decisions are still pending out of 138 applications concerning recycled plastic, with the consequence that all recycling processes can be authorized regardless of the final safety assessment of the material,” states the M156S MEP. The analysis of the problem doesn't end there: “It also emerges that residues of some pesticides, whose use is restricted within the Union, could be tolerated in imported products because, according to World Trade Organization rules, importing countries can only assess the risk to consumers and cannot use hazard-based criteria to exclude potential imports.” A real danger in the foods we eat every day. For this reason, Pedicini turned to the European Commission to find out “what measures have been taken to ensure the safety of food contact materials, whether recycled plastic or not.” Pedicini also asked “if and which countries have recently requested ‘import tolerance’ for foods containing active substances that are unauthorized or subject to restrictions.” to restrictions in the European Union and to which it has been recognized”.
