Like every year, the Museum of the City and Territory of Cori and the cultural association Arcadia, under the patronage of the municipality of Cori, are participating in the European Night of Museums 2019, offering two events in the late afternoon of Saturday 18 May: at 17:00 pm Laura Sagripanti will hold the conference entitled “Votive deposits of Rome and Lazio. The case of Sermoneta-Valvisciolo”.
Archaeology of the sacred. More than a century has passed since excavations conducted in Pietra dello Schiavo, to determine the chronology of the terracing system of Monte Carbolino, led to the discovery of a notable votive deposit: over 6000 objects, mainly datable between the end of the XNUMXth and the beginning of the XNUMXth century BC, divided between ceramic pottery, bronze objects, ornaments and various tools. The peculiarities, the characteristics of the complex and its topographical position have recently aroused renewed interest, especially in relation to other votive contexts known in Latium vetus and in the bordering territories. The deposit thus enters as an element of discussion in the debate on the forms of worship and its relative manifestations, among which the use of the miniaturization of ceramic pottery remains peculiar, a ritual custom common to many votive deposits. In recent times, a more conscious and critical approach has prevailed towards the very concept of cult context and its possible interpretations, especially in relation to the beliefs, rituals and ceremonies connected to them, and this conference aims to give an account of this starting from an important deposit such as that of Valvisciolo.
At 18.30:XNUMX pm, “Capitelli in Musica” will follow, a focus on the symbolic and spatial relationships of the figurative capitals of the former Augustinian convent of Sant'Oliva, home of the museum. Spectators will be guided in the reading of the iconographies exhibited by the sculptures of the loggia, the work of the Lombard stonecutter Antonio da Como, by the narrator (texts and voice by the Arcadia cultural association) and by the Musici Viatores (Francesco Ciccone – viella and rebec and Angelo Giuliani – percussion and frame drums), underlining the grandeur of the work. A small refreshment will follow. Free admission.
