In Naples, the metro, funiculars and buses are like crematoriums: and the bus stops lack shelters

In the sights of travellers and the associations that represent them are the now endemic Neapolitan deficiencies in the public transport sector. “With the torrid heat of these days, both rubber and rail vehicles, where adequate air conditioning systems have not been provided, are transformed into a sort of crematoriums, free but unwelcome saunas for passengers, many of whom are tourists visiting the Neapolitan capital – says Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari e del Trasporto pubblico – With so many millions of euros spent to modernise the sector in recent years, air conditioning systems could have been installed in the carriages of both the funiculars and the hilly metro, or at least tried to study systems to promote better and more suitable air circulation in the carriages. The same could have been done on all ANM rubber-tyred vehicles, few of which are equipped with air conditioning, taking into account that in recent times the average summer temperature in Naples has significantly increased and that the humidity level in the carriages is almost always at the saturation level due to the presence of so many people and the lack of adequate ventilation.
“In truth, there is a sort of ventilation system in the carriages of the Central Funicular – continues Capodanno -. But, it is not clear whether it is working or not. The only certain thing is that the benefits, in terms of relief from the heat and humidity, appear to travellers to be almost non-existent”. “Things are no better at the bus stops, where in many cases there are no shelters – concludes Capodanno -. Travellers are thus forced to get an unpleasant tan, having no possibility of sheltering themselves from the rays of the summer sun during the waits, which are destined to get longer due to the suppression and weakening of some lines to make up for the lack of staff, caused by the use of holidays”. Capodanno invites the competent bodies to intervene to ensure greater comfort for travellers, with respect to the problems raised, with particular reference to the summer period.
