"The extraordinary capacity for synthesis between competence and communication, or between the values of scientific knowledge and the methods of transmitting knowledge in the era of new media”. This is the summary of the reasons why the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, which in 1993 was the first Italian university to launch a training program on the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, chose to award an honorary master's degree in Archaeology to Alberto Angela. Born in 1962 in Paris, Alberto Angela, after graduating in Natural Sciences from La Sapienza University of Rome, specialized in paleontology and paleoanthropology at some of the most prestigious American universities (from Harvard to Columbia). Over the last thirty years, through his television and editorial work, he has become one of the most important international science communicators (with reports and documentaries made on every continent: from the Peruvian Andes to Vietnam, from Tanzania to Congo). On Tuesday, June 25th at 4:30 pm in the Sala degli Angeli of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University, one year after being awarded honorary citizenship of Naples and Pompeii, the honorary degree in Archaeology will be further recognition of his particular commitment to the scientific and cultural dissemination of the great artistic, historical and archaeological heritage of Campania, for which the episode of "Ulisse" dedicated to "The Thousand Secrets of Naples" has become a cult, an extraordinary journey through some of the most evocative places in the city (from the Sansevero Chapel to the Bourbon Tunnel). From Emma Giammattei's laudatio to Alberto Angela's lectio magistralis on the 'modern' tale of the ancient: the program of the ceremony and the composition of the Commission. Representing the extraordinary breadth of his skills and knowledge, Alberto Angela's honorary degree will be awarded by a highly prestigious degree committee representing the various academic fields that encompass his work in scientific dissemination: from history to art, from science to literature. A commission which will include, among others, Massimo Bray, general director of the Treccani Italian Encyclopedia Institute, Enrico Corbi, director of the Department of Educational, Psychological and Communication Sciences of Suor Orsola, Piero Craveri, president of the Suor Orsola Benincasa Moral Entity, Paola D'Agostino, director of the Bargello National Museum in Florence, Edoardo D'Angelo, president of the Master's Degree Course in Archaeology and History of Art of Suor Orsola, Stefano De Luca, president of the Master's Degree Course in Modern Languages for Communication and International Cooperation of Suor Orsola, Luciano Garella, Superintendent of the Archaeological Heritage of the Municipality of Naples, Gianluca Genovese, president of the Degree Course in Modern Languages and Cultures of Suor Orsola, Pierluigi Leone De Castris, director of the School of Specialization in Historical and Artistic Heritage of Suor Orsola, Massimiliano Marazzi, director of the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Cultural Heritage of Suor Orsola. In the Sala degli Angeli of Suor Orsola (the ancient 17th-century church of the Ursuline citadel embellished with five large paintings by some of the most famous Neapolitan painters of the 17th century, from Malinconico to Vaccaro), the ceremony to award Alberto Angela an honorary master's degree in archaeology will be opened by Lucio d'Alessandro, Rector of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University and Vice President of the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities, who anticipated that "this important recognition seeks to underline the pedagogical importance of the wise interconnection between knowledge and the new methods of its transmission, which in Angela is enhanced by a unique communicative vision capable of inspiring even the youngest users to be passionate about cultural heritage and the non-inert worship of the past." Alberto Angela's presentation will be entrusted to archaeologist Antonio De Simone, associate professor of History of Ancient Architecture at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University, who worked with Angela for many years to disseminate the discoveries of numerous excavation sites (from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum to the Villa of Augustus in Somma Vesuviana). The laudatory address, entrusted to Emma Giammattei, director of the Department of Humanities at Suor Orsola, will introduce Alberto Angela's keynote address on the topic "Telling the Ancient: Images and Stories of Archaeology."
