Carabinieri from the ROS (Special Operations Squad) and the Naples operations unit have executed 13 pre-trial detention orders against suspects believed to be affiliated with the Di Lauro clan and individuals belonging to allied clans, such as Vanella Grassi, who allegedly committed crimes on behalf of the Di Lauros. The order was issued by the Naples investigating judge (GIP) following investigations by the Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA). The investigation—based on statements from collaborators with justice, wiretaps, and a wealth of evidence—has allowed the reconstruction of the current clan's organizational structure and, most importantly, the evolution of the role of Marco Di Lauro, captured on March 2 after nearly fifteen years on the run, as well as its military and, in part, financial structure, with the laundering of the gang's illicit proceeds. According to the ROS, this investigation is a development and update of previous investigations conducted in recent years, some of which have already been concluded with trials and rulings. These investigations confirm the clan's current operations and its ability to influence the dynamics of the local Camorra, often intervening through satellite or allied groups. This demonstrates, the Carabinieri emphasize, "the Di Lauros' ability to become a group with strong international traction, choosing to diversify its areas of interest, without abandoning drug trafficking but prioritizing its original interests in counterfeit branded products and smuggling." In this way, the clan has been able to reinvest the fortune accumulated over many years of Camorra activity in both legitimate and low-level illicit businesses, returning in some ways to its roots, following in the footsteps of Paolo Di Lauro's trafficking operations before the explosion of the drug dealing hubs in northern Naples, which had long been in the hands of other gangs. This management, while relatively unspectacular on a military level, does not exclude the targeted use of violence, as demonstrated by the ambush against Pasquale Spinelli in 2012, features such figures as Salvatore Di Lauro and Salvatore Tamburrino, as well as others who have created a network of illicit interests not easily traceable to the gang. These interests range from criminal welfare to a variety of criminal activities and, above all, an extraordinary web of connections that, until three months ago, allowed them to support Marco Di Lauro's decades-long absence.
