“We have inherited a dramatic situation in the penitentiary world in Italy.” This was stated by the Minister of Justice Alfonso Bonafede, today in Naples together with the Minister of Defense Trenta for the signing of a framework protocol that will assign the abandoned barracks to new use. “The pardons that empty the prisons were useless, what we decided to do is invest resources in prisons and in the education of prisoners,” added Minister Bonafede, defining the level of prison construction as “very low, sometimes disrespectful of the dignity of the prisoners who live there and of the Penitentiary Police.” “The number of structures that will be transferred to new use has yet to be determined,” he continued, “for now we are working on the first ideas relating to four structures.” “This is the response of the State and not of a single minister, because when there is a citizen at the center, all the State expenses must be put together to avoid waste in order to solve the problem,” concluded the minister. This is how we are addressing the problems in this Government.”
