“Another emergency is unfolding in prisons, no less worrying, the water shortage, which in these days of scorching heat is throwing several penitentiary institutions into chaos. The structures that house the inmates, often very old, have pipes and ducts worn out by time that are unable to supply water to all floors of the buildings and cope with such a massive prison population. To save money, some institutes are considering limiting the water supply during the night. An inadequate and unproductive choice. I receive reports and protests from Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Ariano Irpino, Naples, Salerno and Bellizzi Irpino”. This is reported by Samuele Ciambriello, guarantor of the inmates of Campania. “In the Avellino prison, inmates have been 'beating' for days, yesterday they did not want to enter their cells, and other peaceful forms of protest. The Alto Calore company that manages the service must increase the supply for the 582 inmates present. In this prison, since 2012 there has been a new department (with 150 more inmates), but the system is not working properly. The water network has not been adapted. From outside - explains Ciambriello - an amount of water arrives that is less than what is needed. Already in 2015 there was a revolt by inmates due to this emergency. And then, still in many prisons: walls at risk of collapse, plaster consumed by humidity and mold, lamps that come loose, water leaks that risk coming into contact with exposed electrical wires, flooded corridors, as I and a magistrate have seen in the prison of Salerno. The lack of water causes tensions and health emergencies. I ask the institutions in charge, the companies that manage the water services, the Department of Penitentiary Administration to intervene, also with urgent work to adapt the water network", concludes Ciambriello.
