Campania Region President Vincenzo De Luca said this morning on Radio Crc, speaking about the 2019 Naples Universiade, which will begin on July 3. "This was truly a gamble, a madness that I believe we're winning," De Luca added. "I remember that five years ago, the Universiade was intended for Brazil, which then withdrew due to financial difficulties. We took over two years late, having to invest €270 million ourselves. I remember that, just to be admitted, we paid €20 million to Lausanne, where FISU is headquartered." De Luca explained the reasons for the challenge: "We decided on this major investment to radically transform the image of Naples and Campania around the world, to boost the tourism and hospitality economy, and to host an event of great cultural and human exchange among thousands of athletes from around the world. Furthermore," he noted, "we are using regional funds to rebuild 60 sports facilities in Naples and other municipalities in Campania, facilities that had been abandoned for decades and have been reborn. This revolution should also serve to revitalize a large youth sports movement in at-risk neighborhoods, an opportunity to meet and absorb the positive values that sport instills."
