Inmate dies in Santa Maria prison: autopsy will clarify the causes

An autopsy will determine the cause of death of inmate Angelo Serra, 38, from Caivano, who died during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison. He likely suffered a heart attack that left him without life support. The man, who was scheduled to be released next year, was not suffering from any underlying medical conditions. His cellmates were the first to notice his death in the morning. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. An investigation into his death has been opened. He was arrested last year for a robbery near the Royal Palace of Caserta while under special surveillance, requiring him to remain in his municipality of residence. Pietro Loia, a prisoner rights activist through the association Ex Detenuti Organizzati Napoletani (Ex Don), intervened in the case. He posted on his Facebook profile the last letter sent by Angelo Serra to his boss from inside prison. "Angelo died in a prison built on a landfill, a prison where mosquitoes eat you alive, a prison where there has never been drinking water, a prison of cancer, in defiance of human dignity." Samuele Ciambriello, Campania's guarantor for prisoners, also commented: "You can't die in prison or in jail. It's unacceptable."
