Three years after the murder of Esther, a young Nigerian woman who entered the sex trade and was riddled with seven gunshots fired by a still-unknown killer, Benevento still pauses to reflect. The Archbishop's Curia wanted to dedicate to this woman a project financed by the Italian Episcopal Conference within the Campaign "Free to Leave, Free to Stay". The project “Esther, lest we forget”, managed by the Consorzio Sale della Terra in collaboration with Solot, Compagnia Stabile di Benevento, aims to combat the phenomenon of trafficking thanks to the Centro Ascolto Donna e Vittime di Trafficking of the Diocesan Caritas and a mobile psycho-pedagogical unit that from September will tour the outskirts of the province with the Camper #Ventotene to approach women who want to free themselves from this absurd yoke that, according to data from the World Organization for Migration, involves at least 80% of all Nigerian migrant women, often victims of scams and deceptions that establish their methods and routes of disembarkation. Not only. The Esther project wants to speak to Italians, to those many Italians who place themselves as the final customers of this infernal traffic of human beings. As with all market conditions, it is clear to everyone that the route will be drastically reduced only if the “demand” drops. If intervening upstream on the phenomenon of trafficking to eradicate it means intensifying international cooperation efforts between states, to reduce demand we only need new awareness in the men and women of our territories. “We are certain that under current conditions – explains Angelo Moretti, general director of the Consorzio Sale della Terra – legalizing prostitution today would only mean legalizing trafficking, adding to the damage already experienced by the victims the mockery of Western states conniving with such trafficking. This can never be the solution to so much pain." "We speak to customers - says Don Nicola De Blasio, director of the Diocesan Caritas of Benevento - because it is the Church's duty to break down the wall of indifference if not of arrogance towards all women victims, through concrete actions and constant awareness-raising efforts. That death must not be forgotten or trivialized by the many crime stories that reach us daily, it must remain an uncomfortable goad for the conscience of the people of Benevento, who were unable to intervene before the violent death of the girl". For these reasons, the first activities of the project were the theatre workshops conducted by Solot. The Solot Compagnia Stabile worked with three different groups: a group over 26, a group affiliated with the Historic Center of Benevento and a group of young people. The actors are almost all at their first experience and have worked in different ways on the same theme, 26 people in total. The three performances of these groups will be performed close to the anniversary of Esther's death.
