As part of intensifying efforts to combat illicit trafficking, Capodichino Airport customs officers, working with officials from the Customs Office (SOT Capodichino Airport), identified five Russian nationals, aged 35 to 60, at the Naples airport. They were carrying a total of 90,14 kilograms of contraband cigarettes of various brands in their personal luggage. Specifically, Capodichino Airport customs officers, following a careful risk analysis of passenger lists, including passengers arriving not only from sensitive locations but also from domestic airports strategically located for international destinations, were focusing on five Russian nationals recently arrived from Moscow among the numerous passengers transiting through the Campania airport.
The latter, after collecting their luggage, hastily prepared to exit but were stopped by the military for the ritual formalities. Not providing convincing explanations about the reasons for the transit and showing abnormal nervousness in the circumstance, they were subjected to a check, thus finding the presence, inside their respective luggage as well as inside the travel garment bag, of a total of 450 cartons of contraband cigarettes.
The 5 responsible were reported to the competent Judicial Authority with the accusation of tle smuggling. The fight against illegal trafficking in general and the contrast of cigarette smuggling, in addition to preventing and repressing other more serious forms of illegality, aims to safeguard the health of citizens.
