"Modern Western archaeology was born in Herculaneum with the beginning of the Bourbon excavations. – declares Director Sirano – From that moment on, a process was triggered that led archaeology from a simple search for objects, possibly beautiful, to be one of the leading historical disciplines. Archaeology is now mature, it has become an open and multidisciplinary field of investigation and experiences are multiplying to broaden the sphere of dissemination. Herculaneum is today a site perfectly inserted in this climate. The cover of this month’s specialized magazine “Archeo” is, not by chance, dedicated to Herculaneum. Our team, enriched by the international presence ensured by the Herculaneum Conservation Project, is composed of archaeologists, restorers, communicators, architects, engineers, social studies experts, mediators. Universities and independent scholars collaborate for the advancement of knowledge in all fields. The Park is becoming day by day what I think it should be: an open-air laboratory of inclusive and communicative archaeology. Only in this way will we ensure that we fulfill our duty to make the visit a concrete experience of knowledge.”
