Rocco Morabito, a member of the 'Ndrangheta, has escaped from the central prison in Montevideo, Uruguay, along with three other inmates. This was reported by the local newspaper El Observador, citing the Ministry of the Interior. The four inmates escaped in the early hours of the morning through a hole made in the roof of the building. Morabito, 53, was arrested in the Uruguayan capital in 2017 and was awaiting a decision on his extradition to Italy, where he has been wanted for over 23 years. After making a hole, he climbed onto a terrace of the prison and from there, through a window, entered the apartment of an elderly neighbor. This, investigators report, is the dynamics of the escape of the 'ndrangheta boss: Morabito, writes the newspaper "El Observador" which managed to interview the owner of the apartment, broke in together with his accomplices and obtained the keys to the door of the building which is located next to the penitentiary, in the center of the city, before fleeing. The police, authorities report, have launched an extensive search operation throughout the city and issued an alert for the border areas. According to the newspaper, the boss also stole cash from the seventy-year-old owner of the apartment. Morabito, sentenced in absentia by the Italian judiciary to 30 years in prison for drug trafficking, was waiting to be transferred to our country after the local justice system had granted his extradition last March. Initial information gathered by authorities indicates that the Calabrian mafia boss managed to escape along with two other inmates from the terrace of the prison located in the heart of the capital. The man, 53, was arrested in September 2017 in a hotel in Montevideo after 23 years on the run. Morabito was hiding behind the false identity of a 49-year-old Brazilian businessman named Francisco Cappelletto.
