Sant'Antonio Abate. An investigation has been opened into the fire that broke out in a warehouse used for waste storage and which also affected another structure of a company involved in the tomato processing sector. Dozens of firefighters took part in the extinguishing operations that lasted until dawn. The fire broke out, in conditions that will later be ascertained, shortly after 21 pm yesterday evening when the company was already closed. The flames quickly also affected the adjacent warehouse containing canned peeled tomatoes. The late hour meant that there was no one inside the structures.
Initially, residents and business owners intervened, using their own means to contain the fire while waiting for the firefighters to arrive. Teams of firefighters from Sorrento, Castellammare di Stabia, Angri, Torre del Greco and Naples worked tirelessly until dawn this morning. The civil protection of Santa Maria la Carità, the ROSS and New Emergency also contributed to the rescue operations until late in the evening.
After the actual extinguishing of the fire, the Prosecutor's Office, as is usual practice, will open a case against unknown persons. The firefighters' findings will establish whether it was an accidental or malicious act. The businessmen damaged by the flames that devoured material and machinery are in shock.
