The Second Court of Assizes of Naples rejected the motion for acquittal filed on May 31 by Astolfo Di Amato, representing Swiss entrepreneur Stephan Schmidheiny, charged in Naples with the voluntary manslaughter of eight people (six employees of the Eternit plant in Bagnoli and two of their relatives). The reasons for the decision were read at the beginning of the hearing by Presiding Judge Alfonso Barbarano, who then opened the trial with requests for evidence. Flora Abate and Elena Bruno, lawyers for the associations "National Asbestos Observatory" and "Never Again Asbestos," expressed their satisfaction.
