A political thriller set in 1913, during the period of grave international tension caused by the Balkan war against the Ottoman Empire, "The Archduke Must Die" by Maurizio Scateni, published by Kairos (222 pages, €15), is based on in-depth historical studies, personalities , and the international balance of power of the period. It gives voice to fictional yet believable, real yet paradoxical, and famous characters, including a young Winston Churchill. The book will be presented on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at 6:30 pm at the Iocisto bookshop in Piazza Fuga, Naples. Speakers include Rita Felerico (critic) and Fiorella Franchini (journalist). Through the protagonists' memories and the episodes recounted, the events of that historical period, from the capture of Rome to the outbreak of the First World War, are depicted, somewhat hastily called the Belle Époque. And it is precisely during this period that the wars of independence, Bismarck's policies, anarchist movements, the Russo-Japanese War, technological progress, the Anglo-Boer War emerge… All this forms the backdrop to a gripping novel that the author crafts, weaving a plot that is not only fascinating but precise, leaving nothing to chance. To manage any kind of complication on his borders, the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph has appointed General Hoetzendorf as head of his army. Despite Vienna and Rome being allies, Hoetzendorf is known for having made no secret of his aggressive intentions toward Italy, which he considers Austria's mortal enemy. Italy, on the other hand, has not yet overcome the aftermath of unification, but already wants to project itself into the European context as a great power. In this situation, the Italian Foreign Minister, San Giuliano, believes he detects in a letter the traces of a plot that would lead to war between the two nations. He therefore entrusts Baron Luparelli, who lives in Naples, with the task of uncovering Hoetzendorf's true intentions. But San Giuliano keeps the baron in the dark about an important factor that will turn the whole affair around. Flanked by a most dutiful butler and an unconventional wife, Luparelli will face secret pacts, fearsome weapons, priceless paintings, traps to unmask him, hasty escapes, shadowing, double-crossers, and costumed parties. These missions will take him first to Vienna, then Prague, then London, and finally to his native Naples. Here, everything will converge in a plot and a counter-plot to assassinate an important figure in the Austrian royal family.
