A bittersweet evening for the Italy Under 21s, who on the last day of the group stage of the European Championship in their category, won 3-1 against Belgium, but now see their last hopes of reaching the semifinals hanging by a thread. Spain's 5-0 against Poland, in fact, guarantees first place to the Spanish in Group A, leaving the fate of the Azzurri in the hands of the teams in the other groups. In Reggio Emilia, goals from Barella, Cutrone and Chiesa were decisive, a pearl from Verschaeren was not enough for the Belgians. The Azzurri started with their foot on the accelerator and in the 7th minute they created the first great scoring opportunity of the match: a cross from Pezzella from the left, Barella was all alone in the area but incredibly failed to hit the target with a diving header. Lukebakio on the other side fouled Meret's gloves, in the only Belgian opportunity of the first half of the game. The match, in fact, is inevitably made by Italy, which also scares Belgium with the conclusions of Chiesa, Mandragora and Pellegrini, all poisonous but lacking precision. As the minutes pass the pace seems to slow slightly and the Azzurri are in a bit of difficulty, but right before half-time Di Biagio's team finds the spark to take the lead with Barella, good at beating De Wolf with his left foot that is worth 1-0. With the bad news coming from Spain-Poland (3-0 up to that point for the red furies who would qualify as first), upon returning from the locker rooms Italy continues the push and also finds the double with the beautiful header of Cutrone on a cross from Pellegrini. Locatelli, Mandragora and Cutrone himself go one step away from the third, lack of precision and two excellent responses from De Wolf however deny another joy to the Azzurri. In the 79th minute, Belgium closed the gap with a great goal by Verschaeren, which worsened the goal difference of Di Biagio's team, who were unlucky in the final minutes of the match to hit the post with a header by Mancini, but were still able to score the third goal thanks to a pearl by Chiesa. The final score was 3-1 at the Mapei Stadium, now we can only hope for some comforting results.
