As usual, the flagship summer event of the Campania Shopping Center, Luglio in jazz, returns with its VIII Edition. After the success of the preview with guests Tullio de Piscopo and Tony Esposito, the 2019 edition is enriched with new and interesting names from the national and international scene. Luglio in jazz is a consolidated event in the Italian music scene. Over the years, world-famous artists have performed on the stage in Piazza Campania accompanied by top-level instrumentalists. Jazz is a genre now loved by everyone that always brings together new enthusiasts thanks to a great variety of musical trends and multifaceted artists.
We start on Wednesday 3 July with PATTI AUSTIN. A great voice with an intense career, she has crossed all musical genres, recorded 16 solo albums and presented, both at the Grammys and the Oscars, her most famous songs that have obtained the nomination. Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington have elected themselves as her godfathers and Quincy Jones made her known in Europe, at the age of 9. At 16 on tour with Harry Belafonte and from then on a series of excellent duets: with James Ingram, Michael Jackson, George Benson, Luther Vandross. As a session singer She has recorded with Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Joe Cocker, to name a few. In 2008, Patti Austin won her first Grammy. Austin tours constantly, receiving enthusiastic standing ovations wherever she goes.
On Wednesday 10th July THE BRIAN MCNIGHT4 will take to the stage in Piazza Campania. McKnight has released 19 albums, with over 30 million copies sold worldwide, receiving international recognition and awards, with 16 Grammy Award nominations and an American Music Award. His most famous album is undoubtedly Back At One, with over 3 million copies sold. “Forever”, the first single from the 2017 album “Genesis”, quickly reached the Top 25 on Billboard’s Adult R&B chart, positioning itself at the top of the radio charts. His new album “Bedtime Story”, due out on 14th June 2019, will be an integral part of his tour. A singer, songwriter and producer, McKnight is above all a multi-instrumentalist, a virtuoso on piano, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, trombone, tuba, flugelhorn and trumpet.
On July 17, it will be the turn of DIANNE REEVES. A five-time Grammy winner, she is the world’s leading jazz vocalist. She has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim; worked with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic; and was the first vocalist to perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. In recent years, Reeves has toured around the world, including in “Sing the Truth,” a musical celebration of Nina Simone. She has performed at the White House on several institutional occasions. Her latest work, “Beautiful Life,” won the 2015 Grammy for best jazz vocal performance. She has also been awarded honorary doctorates by Berklee College of Music and the Juilliard School, and in 2018 received the Jazz Master, the highest honor reserved for jazz artists in the United States.
ANTONIO FARAO EKLETKTIK will perform on July 24th. Pianist admired all over the world. Antonio Farao' has collaborated with some of the most important artists on the world scene. In Italy his work with Mina is famous and also in the USA with a world hip hop star like Snoop Dogg. In 2015 and 2018 he was the only Italian artist invited to the International Jazz Day, a global event organized by Thelonius Monk, UNESCO and the United Nations, where over 20 high-profile jazz musicians gather. On stage with Farao were artists such as Wayne Shorter, Brandford Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller. Much admired by Herbie Hancock who says of him "Antonio is not only an excellent pianist, he is a great one".
Closing the eighth edition of Luglio in Jazz, on Wednesday 31st, are INCOGNITO. Formed in 1979, the group Incognito with Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick celebrates 40 years of jazz-funk successes. Having moved to London from his native Mauritius at the age of 10, “Bluey” was inspired by the British music scene, discovering Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, but also Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang, although the true origin of Incognito comes from the link with English bands such as Gonzalez and FBI. From Top 10 hits to productions and collaborations with legendary artists – R&B icons and powerhouse vocalists, contemporary jazz musicians, international multi-instrumentalists and songwriters, including George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Philip Bailey, Jocelyn Brown, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Paul Weller, Maxi Priest, Mario Biondi – “Bluey” Maunick certainly finds his place among the “greats” of soul music.
