Naples, Amitrano (M5S): 'A dramatic debacle on public transport'

“35% reduction in bus runs in the summer, already dramatically insufficient for a city of one million inhabitants with a significant tourist flow. Continuous blockages of the subway. Funiculars, like the one in Mergellina, that close for two months. Citizens exasperated and resigned to continuous inconveniences and enormous difficulties. Is this the 'Naples world capital of transport efficiency in 2019' announced by de Magistris? A metropolis in which users are left on foot?”. This is what M5S MP Alessandro Amitrano says, who has filed a parliamentary question on the two-month closure of the Mergellina funicular. According to Amitrano, “the debacle of public transport in Italy's third largest city is clear. For comparison: in Turin, the fourth largest city in Italy, in 2017 the fleet of the transport company Gtt, where they have planned investments of 240 million euros and the purchase of 470 buses and 40 trams, was almost three times greater than that of the ANM of Naples. Neapolitans and tourists have the right to a dignified service and do not deserve to be forced to consider the arrival of a bus at the stops a mirage”, he concludes.
