Naples. Another collapse of rubble in the historic part of the city occurred this morning on Via Sant'Anna dei Lombardi in the Spanish Quarter. The rocks nearly hit some passersby, who immediately alerted the fire department, who began an investigation. The situation of unsafe buildings and cornices, following the tragedy on Via Duomo where 66-year-old shopkeeper Rosario Padolino died, is becoming a hot topic of the Neapolitan summer. And yesterday, another tragedy was averted near Loreto Mare. An old, disused ice cream parlor has been there for years, and the building is unsafe. Despite safety nets (though they've been there for years and are practically useless), some rocks fell onto the street and nearly hit a woman who was passing by. The structure, located on Via Cosenz, Via Santa Maria delle Grazie a Loreto, and Piazzetta Sbordone, has a partially collapsed roof, and the rains are making it a real public hazard. Residents and business owners in the area have started a petition and reported the danger to the municipality. But despite numerous reminders, no one (including the owner) seems to have taken action to address the dangerous situation. Moreover, the old ice house is adjacent to a small building that could be affected if the structure collapsed. Local residents are demanding an investigation and the elimination of all dangers. "Yesterday we only narrowly avoided tragedy. But what about next time?" they say.
