A true jazz icon on the great cone of Vesuvius. After the announcement of the Snarky Puppy concert at the Roman amphitheater in Avella (July 12), the second international guest of the 2th edition of Pomigliano Jazz in Campania will be the legendary American saxophonist Charles Lloyd who closes the preview of the festival, before the concerts of the second part scheduled for September which will feature, among others, Daniele Sepe with XNUMX original productions.
With his quartet, Lloyd will perform on Sunday 28 July on the summit of the most famous volcano in the world, on the edge of the crater until sunset. A show of great impact and suggestion, in a special acoustic formation that will see the double bass player Reuben Rogers, the guitarist Marvin Sewell and the drummer Eric Harland, who for the occasion will use a minimal set of small percussion instruments. An unmissable event that will allow the audience of Pomigliano Jazz to confront one of the stars of African-American music, in an extraordinary context.
The event at Vesuvius is a unique experience and the concert represents its central part. For this reason the public is asked to observe some fundamental rules, in order to fully live this emotional experience.
The meeting point is at 16.30:1.000 pm at the 17.00 quota square in Ercolano, where there are refreshment points and toilets. For logistical reasons, it will not be possible to join the group to reach the concert site after XNUMX:XNUMX pm. Possession of a ticket will not guarantee access to the concert if this time limit is not respected.
From the square, you walk up accompanied by volcanological guides, along a series of extraordinarily panoramic hairpin bends that lead to the edge of the crater. The concert, acoustic, is attended sitting on the floor on cushions and applause will not be permitted in order not to disturb the fauna present on the crater, in its natural habitat. The musicians will play until sunset. At the end of the concert, you return to the square, always accompanied by volcanological guides.
To best experience the event, comfortable equipment is recommended: sports or trekking shoes, sweatshirt or k-way. The uphill hike is of medium difficulty.
After the concerts of Richard Galliano and Marco Zurzulo (2014), of the trio Maria Pia De Vito, Enrico Rava, Roberto Taufic (2015), of Enzo Avitabile with Ashraf Sharif Khan, Gianluigi Di Fenza and Rino Zurzolo (2016), of the duo Paolo Fresu and Daniele Di Bonaventura (2017) and of Louis Sclavis and Dominique Pifarely (2018), it will be up to the Charles Lloyd Quartet to transform the contrasting emotions evoked by the volcano into music.
Raised under the protective wing of musicians such as BB King, Howlin' Wolf and Johnnie Ace, Charles Lloyd brought his style to the meditative heights of John Coltrane. Today he is a gentleman who has just passed eighty years of age and has crossed the history of 900th century music in a transversal way, lending his masterful skill also to groups such as the Beach Boys, the Doors and Canned Heat, demonstrating that he is not an orthodox jazz and that he knows how to look freely at the totality of music. Not only that, under his protective wing have blossomed musicians of the caliber of Keith Jarrett and Michel Petrucciani, just to name two names. And again thanks to his quintet, Jarrett met the drummer Jack De Johnette, later giving life to the trio that influenced much of modern jazz. To quote Carlos Santana: "an international heritage".
The event on Vesuvius is part of the shared Green Jazz project, founded on a network of institutional partners ranging from Legambiente to Slow Food, to the Vesuvius National Park Authority.
Green Jazz means playing new music that respects the environment and promotes the culture of responsibility and sustainability. This year it will also be #vesuviusplasticfree, a further step forward towards reducing environmental impact and in line with international campaigns for the elimination of plastic. Therefore, the use of plastic bottles is prohibited. The public will be given special water bottles to fill at the water columns appropriately installed along the ascent route.
Tickets to attend Charles Lloyd's exclusive live performance on Vesuvius are available at a cost of 25 euros + presale fees on the TicketOnLine – Azzurro Service circuit (tel. 0815934001).
