Doutdo is a two-year project started in 2012 and promoted by the Friends of the Hospice MT Foundation Association. Chiantore Seràgnoli, with the aim of supporting the Hospice Foundation in Bologna: a “giving for giving” that opposes, or at least differs from, a utilitarian or selfish “giving for receiving”. A restitution of meaning and value, that operated by doutdo, which does not seek or expect anything in return. DO UT DO Tel. 051 271060 Fax 051 266499 info@doutdo.it www.doutdo.it www.FaceBook.com/DoUtDo This edition of doutdo is therefore set to become a manifesto that reflects on management models that, by connecting responsibility and sensitivity, ethics and aesthetics, social and individual dimensions, propose shared objectives, in their albeit minimal revolutionary (or Dadaist?) inspiration. And moreover, the German artist Joseph Beuys – evoking the looks and steps of Giovanni Pellizza da Volpedo's Quarto Stato (1901) – had already affirmed, in Naples, in 1971, that "we are the revolution". It is about reclaiming those glances and taking those steps again… For this reason, in the doutdo installation, works are brought together – in many cases produced specifically by doutdo – that are different from each other, as they are the result of the spontaneous donation of an artist, autonomous works, each in its own way, but testimony, taken together, of the morality of those individual artists who constitute the community of exploration and journey of doutdo. * Andrea Viliani, Director of MADRE The morality of individuals: why Pompeii The contemporary art works of the doutdo collection are hosted in a unique location in the world, the Pompeii excavations. The theme that inspired the works represents an important reflection on human actions and the responsibility of each of us. Massimo Osanna, General Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and promoter of the exhibition “The morality of individuals”, comments on the choice to host the important event: “I believe that Pompeii is a place of all time, which has entered the collective imagination not only as a unique testimony of a civilization of the past, but also as an extreme example of the fragility of us human beings and the absolute impossibility of having control over nature or the divine. This reflection, which has never left anyone indifferent – archaeologists, artists, writers, painters – continues to live on today and to transmit the importance of keeping the past alive as a warning for the present. Doutdo, with the 36 works by Italian and international artists, brings together, precisely, the “moral” of individual subjects who express a common thought. That is, that the action of each of us, connected to the other, has great power and is capable of producing changes. Hosting the exhibition in Pompeii, a great sounding board for any event, as well as a symbol par excellence of a place where the responsibility of each person contributes to the safeguarding of this invaluable heritage, represents an opportunity to become aware of our actions and the consequences on the community.” Followed by the words of Alfonsina Russo, until now interim Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii: “Pompeii has always been the theater of the contemporary. This city has captured the imagination and creative spirit of numerous artists and writers throughout the ages up to the present day, often becoming an important stage in their process of formation and maturation.
“And for the first time, perhaps, in the ancient city that was first Greek, then Cumaean, Samnite and finally Roman… a Latin phrase will be pronounced in 2019, but devoid of any apparent sense… not do ut des… but do ut do… The incipit of a new Pompeian tale composed of words and images, of disappearance and reappearance, of ruins and discoveries, of cultural objects and natural materials, of the humanities and hard sciences. Between many individuals and a single community”. – Andrea Viliani The project, curated by Andrea Viliani, Director of MADRE – Donnaregina Museum of Contemporary Art, is part of a unique context: Pompeii. Symbol of destruction and rebirth, the archaeological site of Pompeii embodies the concept of a continually transforming construction site, between ruins and new discoveries, between natural materials and ancient but also contemporary cultural objects that tell the values and history of a community. The design of the technical installation was entrusted to the international studio Mario Cucinella Architects: “I accepted with great happiness the invitation of Alessandra Fini-Zarri to give a contribution to this act of generosity that involves important artists and the entire structure of the Fondazione Seràgnoli – says the architect Mario Cucinella -. Pompeii is a place of extraordinary importance, unique, and today more than ever represents an enormous challenge both for the conservation and for the valorization of the archaeological heritage. Giving life to a contemporary art exhibition is a message of continuity with the spirit of art that has imperturbably passed through the centuries of our lives. The exhibition, in its pragmatic simplicity, wanted to enhance the rhythm that the curator, Andrea Viliani, gave to this sequence of works of art of great beauty, donated by great artists. A touch of colour, that of Pompeian red, which blends with the rhythm of the white walls, gives rise to a linear path that overlooks the garden of the Palestra Grande. Two oases will welcome visitors who will be able to enjoy a break while admiring the works on display”. The 36 works donated by Italian and international artists from the doutdo 2019 collection will be exhibited in the rooms of the North Portico of the Palestra Grande of the archaeological site of Pompeii, located in front of the Amphitheatre. The morality of individuals: the doutdo community This edition of doutdo brings together different subjects in a single large community: from the mentors Alessandro Mendini (in memoriam) and Philip Rylands, to the Artistic and Scientific Committee of the project, from artists to companies up to the many institutions that have embraced the philosophy of the biennial. There are 33 artists who have donated their work with an important act of sharing and whose works will be present in the exhibition: Meris Angioletti, Elisabetta Benassi, Eduardo Cardozo, Loris Cecchini, Fabrizio Cotognini, Cuoghi Corsello, Dado, Alberto Di Fabio, Roberto Fassone, Flavio Favelli, Giovanni Gastel, Mimmo Jodice, Julia Krahn, Andrew Leslie, Alessandro Mendini, Fulvia Mendini, Marzia Migliora, Nino Migliori, Maurizio Nannucci, Moataz Nasr, Katja Noppes, Giovanni Ozzola, Simone Pellegrini, Gianni Pettena, Thomas Ruff, Pietro Ruffo, Sissi, Alessandra Spranzi, Alberto Tadiello, Joe Tilson, Patrick Tuttofuoco, Carlo Valsecchi, Nanda Vigo. DO UT DO Tel. 051 271060 Fax 051 266499 info@doutdo.it www.doutdo.it www.FaceBook.com/DoUtDo But it is also thanks to the availability of many companies that doutdo realizes a charity project of great cultural value dedicated to the world of art, aimed at supporting the research and assistance activities of the Hospice MT Foundation. Chiantore Seragnoli. Some important companies in the stone, furnishing accessories, ceramic, mechanical components and digital printing sectors have offered the artists the materials necessary for the creation of their works, providing support and sustaining the activity of the biennial with a generous act of donation. The art-business union has thus produced results of absolute importance. Examples include the collaborations between Fabrizio Cotognini with Plexibologna and Ricci Marmi; Loris Cecchini with Gilli srl; Cuoghi Corsello with Pimar; Roberto Fassone with MBM Biliardi; Julia Krahn with Quadricroma; Fulvia Mendini and Nanda Vigo with Casone Group; Giovanni Ozzola with Pimar; Marzia Migliora with Ricci Marmi and Metalcarp; Pietro Ruffo with Ceramica Gatti; Patrick Tuttofuoco with Glneon. There are still many partners of this biennial who, thanks to their support, contribute to the creation of this “community”. For a complete list, see the attached Partner Sheet. The exhibition is promoted by doutdo, in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and with the support of Art Defender, a market leader in the conservation and management of art and valuable assets.
