The Teramo preliminary investigations judge, Domenico Canosa, has confirmed the arrest and ordered the arrest of Giuseppe Di Martino from Castellammare di Stabia, accused of killing his father, Giovanni, during a family dispute. The 46-year-old architect will face charges of voluntary manslaughter against his father, a mechanic from Castellammare di Stabia. The incident occurred in Silvi Marina, in the province of Teramo. Yesterday, Giuseppe appeared before the investigating judge and reiterated his version of events: that he intervened when he saw his father repeatedly attack his 76-year-old mother, grabbing him by the neck and engaging in a hand-to-hand fight, repeatedly hitting his head on the dining room table until his father fell backward. Giovanni Di Martino apparently suffered a cervical fracture during that incident, which, according to the autopsy performed last Saturday, was fatal.
A version, however, that does not convince the defense of Giovanni's family who contested this reconstruction of the facts. It would seem that it is not the first time that the son has attacked his father. In fact, just over a year ago the victim filed a complaint against her son for injuries. In addition to this, there are other testimonies that would tell of continuous arguments between father and son. From the autopsy performed on Saturday, several wounds to the skull would have emerged and this would lead to the belief that the son himself would have hit his father's head several times causing injuries that would have become fatal in the following minutes. The defense of the man has requested the application of the alternative measure against the 46-year-old architect, rejected by the investigating judge who charged the suspect with voluntary homicide. The military personnel investigating the case have also heard the victim's wife and mother of the suspect who confirmed the son's version. According to the Prosecutor's Office, his version does not seem credible and that is why the magistrates want to see clearly. The body has been released from sequestration and is on its way to Castellammare where the funeral will be held tomorrow. Furthermore, the economic motive cannot be ruled out.
