The economic and social crisis in Irpinia and, in particular, the risk of closure of the semi-finished wood sector of Iavarone Produzione in Calitri (Avellino) are at the centre of the new parliamentary question formulated to the Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio, Minister of Economic Development, Labour and Social Policies, presented yesterday by Senator Claudio Barbaro elected in the multi-member constituency Campania 1 (Avellino, Benevento, Caserta) on the lists of Alloy.
The text highlights not only the strong economic and social crisis that the entire area of the Irpinia town is experiencing under the risk of closure of the Iavarone company but as a sign of the entire crisis not only of the Avellino area but of the entire Campania province.
«Calitri can be taken as an example of the lack of development of the internal areas of Campania – writes Barbaro in the question – from the general population census of 1951 to today, the inhabitants have halved, while many of the numerous artisan, entrepreneurial and industrial activities present since the early twentieth century have gradually closed, such as those of bricks and ceramics, which exported quality materials and products, those of the textile sector, the confectionery industry and food processing». The area, severely hit by the earthquake of 1980, had been the object of particular interventions to support industrial settlements but, as can be read in the text, «it seems that, 40 years after the earthquake of Irpinia in 1980, the plan for the development of the industrial area of Calitri is, inexorably, destined for a progressive decline».
But Calitri is just the latest piece of an industrial decline in Irpinia marked by the uncertainty of the Fiat Chrysler plant in Pratola Serra, of Novolegno (Fantoni group) in Montefredane and of the former Irisbus in Flumeri. The only hope is the reopening of Ocevi Sud in the industrial area of Morra De Sanctis. An industrial hemorrhage that leaves workers at home and further causes the flight of young people in search of a future towards other shores of Campania, the north and internationally.
The Lega Senator asks the Minister for government intervention, a tangible sign to prevent layoffs and redundancies or, in the event of an irremediable crisis at Iavarone Produzione, interventions to relocate the laid-off workers to the labor market. It would be a first, important step to rethink a new industrial future for the province of Avellino as well as for all the internal areas of Campania.
