The Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Naples and personnel of the Sessa Aurunca company in the province of Caserta, in execution of a provision issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, have seized in Cellole and Sessa Aurunca 3 parcels of land affected by archaeological excavations not authorized by the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape. The investigation led to the seizure of finds of probable archaeological interest inside a private home. In particular, following the investigative activities coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, it was ascertained that important archaeological evidence had been damaged, through excavation work carried out with mechanical means aimed at creating an artifact in the areas subject to criminal seizure, which led to the destruction of an ancient Roman road along the Domitiana state road. The owner of the seized land and the person responsible for the company that carried out the unauthorized excavations were reported at liberty for the crimes of damage to the archaeological heritage of the State, violations in the field of archaeological research, illicit possession of archaeological goods and receiving stolen goods.
