A trial will determine whether anyone was responsible for the plane crash that occurred on August 19, 2014, in Ascoli Piceno. Four pilots, Captains Mariangela Valentini, Alessandro Dotto, Giuseppe Palminteri, and Paolo Piero Franzese, lost their lives in the collision of two tornadoes. Ascoli Piceno preliminary hearing judge Rita De Angelis has indicted Bruno Di Tora, a 47-year-old from Caserta who was then commander of the 154th Squadron, responsible for planning the exercise, and Fabio Saccottelli, a 43-year-old from Verbania, under investigation as the cell leader of the target area planning unit for the same exercise. The two Air Force personnel serving at the Ghedi base, from which the two aircraft took off for the exercise, are charged with manslaughter and negligent aviation disaster. The trial will begin on October 28: Ascoli Prosecutor Umberto Monti alleges negligence in planning the mission against the Freccia 11 and Freccia 21 crews, which took off from the Brescia base and collided over Venarotta shortly after 2:14 PM, killing the four pilots. Their families have joined the case as civil plaintiffs.
