Marcianise businessman Angelo Grillo has exercised his right to remain silent and canceled his second testimony in the trial for bid-rigging in the Santa Maria a Vico waste disposal tender. A dramatic turn of events has occurred during the trial, which is being held before a panel presided over by Judge Roberto Donatiello, involving municipal executive Pio Affinita; former deputy mayor and councilor Ernesto Savinelli, represented by attorney Raffaele Carfora; Colonel Angelo Piscitelli, represented by attorney Raffaele Crisileo; and Raffaele Caduco and Pasquale Valente, represented by attorneys Emilio Russo and Francesco Nacca. All are charged, to varying degrees, with the crimes of bid-rigging, corruption, forgery, and exploitation of prostitution, aggravated by Camorra-related intent.
It was the prosecutor of the DDA Luigi Landolfi who asked the panel to hear Angelo Grillo again in light of new statements made to the investigating bodies following his questioning in court. The entrepreneur, believed to be the entrepreneurial arm of the Belforte clan, connected with the courthouse of Santa Maria Capua Vetere via video conference from the prison of Sulmona.
The defendants' lawyers objected, noting that, for procedural reasons, resulting from Grillo's conviction in the summary trial and in which Grillo had protested his innocence, he could not be forced to testify but should have been warned of the possibility of not answering the prosecutor's questions. A possibility that Grillo intended to exploit by choosing not to answer and skipping his second testimony. The trial was thus postponed to October when the prosecutor's closing speech and the defense lawyers' arguments are scheduled.
According to the prosecution, the contract for the urban hygiene service, for an amount exceeding 4 million euros, was awarded to “Fare l'Ambiente spa”, attributable to the entrepreneur Grillo, in a fraudulent manner. The municipal manager, according to the reconstruction of the Antimafia, was “corrupted” with a romantic date with a Cuban escort in Rome, thus favoring Grillo's company in the awarding of the contract.
