SThere are 23 people under investigation in the investigation into illegal waste trafficking that led today to a series of searches in the provinces of Latina, Rome, Frosinone and Naples in a joint operation between the police and the Carabinieri coordinated by the Capitoline DDA. The investigation began in 2014 in light of a series of complaints filed by citizens of the municipality of Pontinia who complained about the dumping of waste that had not been treated correctly. The investigations, conducted by the Aprilia Highway Police and the Investigative Unit of the Environmental Forestry Police-Nipaaf, of the Latina Carabinieri Group, made it possible to ascertain that the material produced by a specialized company could not be classified as compost but was still disposed of on certain land, even by digging deep holes with bulldozers. The dumping occurred not only in areas near the company itself but also on agricultural land in the province of Rome. “This morning we also proceeded with a precautionary seizure of approximately one million euros,” said the acting prosecutor of Rome, Michele Prestipino, during a press conference. The investigators explained that the environmental damage is “enormous.” “The land where the fake compost was buried also has olive trees and corn planted and is adjacent to other plantations: the risk that this material could have contaminated the crops via the aquifers is there and is real,” the investigators stated.
