“Separate waste collection in Naples is struggling to take off. The effects of this state of affairs are there for all to see, with the bins for collecting paper, glass, and plastic often full, without taking steps to empty them in time and consistently,” begins Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari. “And if this is already worrying for the so-called RSU, solid urban waste, it becomes completely unacceptable for RUP, hazardous urban waste, which includes expired medicines.”
“For these products – continues Capodanno – ASIA, the Environmental Hygiene Services Company, which operates in the Neapolitan area, in its ecovademecum, in advertising the ways in which to implement separate waste collection, indicates that medicines, without packaging, must be brought and deposited directly in the appropriate containers located in pharmacies”.
“But, in the hilly neighborhood of Vomero, from an initial analysis, it would seem that the presence of these containers, near the pharmacies, is insufficient compared to the actual need – Capodanno points out -. Not only that, but the most serious aspect is that the drugs, which could be harmful to health, presumably due to the fact that the full containers are not emptied consistently and in time, are often abandoned on the sidewalk, near the same container, within everyone's reach”.
“All this could contribute to creating a lot of concerns, since we are talking about hazardous waste and, potentially, harmful to human health – adds Capodanno -. To solve the problem, the opportunity to enhance the RUP collection system should be evaluated but, in the meantime, it would be necessary to provide, when necessary and consistently, to empty the containers already present”.
On the issues raised, which are part of the more general picture of the difficult take-off of separate waste collection in Naples, in order to eliminate the dysfunctions highlighted, Capodanno asks that all the necessary measures be adopted quickly by the relevant offices.
