“Yesterday's meeting confirmed the ambiguity of a company. At a certain point it almost broke. The national secretaries were good at resuming it, launching some proposals and with the support of the minister we achieved two important objectives. The non-closure of this site and the non-disengagement of Whirlpool from this plant”. This was stated by Biagio Trapani, general secretary of Fim Cisl of Naples, speaking at the assembly held today at the Whirlpool in via Argine. “The great unity that emerges in this assembly – stated Gianluca Ficco, national secretary of Uilm – strengthens our determination in the fight to save Whirlpool in Naples. The request to all institutions is to stand alongside the workers: Government, Region and local institutions can each do their part. When you defend work and industrial heritage there must be no party divisions”. “The institutions – underlined Barbara Tibaldi, national secretary of Fiom – are strongly present in this battle. They are alongside the workers. Multinationals and companies that want to leave are stopped by workers because workers are the true value of each individual plant”. “Tomorrow – he added – there will be three large demonstrations, in Milan, Florence and Naples. Whirlpool workers could have been a symbol of desperation, instead they managed to be a symbol of hope, because yesterday we saw a multinational retrace its steps, even if not sufficiently”. “We reiterate the request that the discussion start from the agreements already signed – is the comment of the general secretary of Uilm Campania, Antonio Accurso – and from those solutions that can help Italian production recover competitiveness. If Whirlpool violates the agreements it is right that it is penalized, but if it commits to truly relaunching Italian plants, it will be equally essential to support the efforts needed to overcome the current crisis”.
