The asbestos polluting the former Eternit area in the Bagnoli neighborhood of Naples will be removed. The tender for the land remediation was issued by Invitalia, the implementing body for the revitalization plan for the former industrial area. The tender documents were first reviewed by the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC). The contract, divided into a single lot, is worth €20 million. Bids may be submitted until August 6, 2019. The estimated duration of the work is 471 days, during which asbestos dispersion will be constantly monitored using a system of monitoring stations in the affected area and surrounding areas. "The launch of the tender," emphasizes Domenico Arcuri, CEO of Invitalia, "demonstrates, with facts, that the project to return an area like Bagnoli to the citizens of Naples is moving forward within the timeframe known to all who have the patience to study it. Thirty-five tenders will be announced by the end of the year." The remediation covers an area of approximately 16 hectares. Minister for the South, Barbara Lezzi, stated in a statement that "as recently announced, work on the regeneration and redevelopment of Bagnoli is starting. Today, Invitalia published the tender for the remediation of the former Eternit area, which includes the removal of asbestos from that land. This is an important step, especially considering the €20 million contract we're talking about, and a clear and unequivocal response to those who claimed that, with respect to the former Italsider area, time was being wasted and nothing would ever be done. Last year, "At the helm of my ministry," the government representative continues, "has been used to develop and build, together with all stakeholders, the steps necessary to begin construction. This is a complex process, given the size of the area and the many critical issues present. The next steps, expected within this month, will involve Invitalia's initiation of the design for the land reclamation works, the Sports Park, and the urban park, and the publication of the call for proposals for the first phase of the ideas competition. There is a great desire to complete this project," concludes Lezzi, "and to return Bagnoli to its residents and the city of Naples: we are moving forward with commitment, knowing that there is still much to do."
