Cinema, farewell to Ugo Gregoretti. He was 88 years old

Director, actor, journalist, and playwright, Ugo Gregoretti, a keen and ironic observer and narrator of Italian customs, passed away today at his home in Rome. Born in Rome in 1930, he joined RAI in 1953 and made his television debut in 1960 with the documentary "La Sicilia del Gattopardo," which won him the Prix Italia. From then on, he directed a series of television works and investigations, including the series "Romanzo popolare italiano" in the mid-70s. He also directed important and unforgettable television dramas, most notably: The Pickwick Papers. His autobiography, Finale aperto, was published in 2006 and republished in 2012 as La storia sono io (con finale aperto). As an actor, Gregoretti starred in films such as Alberto Sordi's My Love, Help Me and Common Sense of Modesty, Gianni Amelio's The End of the Game, and Ettore Scola's We All Loved Each Other So Much. He also appeared in films with Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Luc Godard, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, and Roman Polanski. For four years, he directed the Teatro Stabile di Torino and for ten years, the Benevento Città spettacolo theater festival. A Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit and a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, Gregoretti also won the Ilaria Alpi television journalism award and the Nastro d'argento for lifetime achievement.
