The Special Unit for the Protection of Privacy and Technological Fraud of the Guardia di Finanza has carried out local and computer searches and subsequent seizures against people accused of online scams that defrauded hundreds of citizens and sold them false insurance policies. The users, convinced they were signing up for advantageous insurance for cars, homes or boats, actually found themselves without any insurance coverage. The investigation, directed by the Milan prosecutor Francesco Greco and coordinated by the deputy Eugenio Fusco and the substitute Christian Barilli, has allowed the identification and blocking of a total of 222 websites that offered online insurance in violation of the provisions imposed by the Private Insurance Code. The modus operandi common to most of the portals identified and used to deceive users who came across the Internet sites involved the improper use of the logos of the most well-known insurance companies operating in Italy and the indication of a counterfeit RUI (Single Register of Insurance Intermediaries) number, functional to the deception. The investigative activity, carried out with the assistance of IVASS (Institute for the Supervision of Insurance), in addition to the blackout of the Web portals, allowed 74 people to be identified and searches to be carried out against the alleged perpetrators of the crime of abusive exercise of the insurance intermediation activity and aggravated fraud.
