Fire on board the Synergas ship in Naples: engineer officer dies

An Italian seafarer, Chief Engineer Roberto Monteguardia, died last night aboard the SynZania vessel, owned by the Synergas shipping company of Naples, which was in the Turkish port of Aliaga. The company explained the incident as follows: "Late in the evening, a fire broke out on the SynZania vessel while loading propylene. The captain and crew members performed emergency maneuvers to secure the vessel, then were forced to abandon it. Unfortunately, during the evacuation, one crew member died for reasons yet to be determined. The captain and the other 14 crew members are in good health. Synergas expresses regret for the loss of our Chief Engineer Roberto Monteguardia. The entire company is shocked and extends its condolences to his family, assuring them of their fullest support." The company's shore team "activated the emergency room at the company headquarters, remaining in contact with the captain and coordinating with the relevant authorities."
